On Tuesday night, Tulsa will host an all-AAC NIT quarterfinal as the No. 1-seeded Golden Hurricane (28-7 overall, 13-5 AAC) welcome the No. 3-seeded Shockers (24-11, 14-6 AAC) into town. Tulsa enters as a solid -4.5 favorite at home, and there are multiple factors pointing to the Hurricane covering that spread in what should be a big win for the Golden Hurricane.
The season-long head-to-head narrative is the biggest tell. Back on February 1, Tulsa took the first meeting at home, 93-83, behind a balanced attack that overwhelmed Wichita State’s defense. The Shockers responded with a gritty 81-77 road victory on February 14 and then knocked off the Hurricane again in the AAC tournament semifinals on March 14 (81-68 in Birmingham). That gives Wichita State two straight wins in the series—but history and conference trends scream that sweeping a familiar league rival three times in one season is extremely difficult. Teams see the same scouting reports, adjustments are made, and fatigue plus familiarity usually tilts the third (or fourth) meeting back toward the home side or the squad with the better regular-season body of work. Tulsa’s 28-7 record and top-15 national scoring average (85.7 PPG) give them the edge here.
Home-court advantage at Reynolds Center cannot be overstated. Tulsa is 15-2 at home this season and has won 8 of its last 9 games overall. The crowd will be electric for an NIT quarterfinal, and the Hurricane’s length and athleticism play up in their own building. On the current 2025-26 roster, senior guard David Green (6-7, 16.1 PPG, 4.5 RPG) and junior guard Tylen Riley (6-3, 15.0 PPG, 4.3 APG) form a dangerous backcourt duo that can create mismatches against Wichita State’s smaller perimeter. Add in junior forward Tyler Behrend (6-10) for rim protection and sophomore guard Carter Benton (6-4) for secondary scoring, and Tulsa has the personnel to exploit the gaps Wichita State showed in the first two losses.
Wichita State is riding a hot streak of its own—winners of 9 of its last 10—but the Shockers’ offense relies heavily on senior guard Kenyon Giles (5-10, 19.1 PPG) and senior forward Karon Boyd (6-5, 10.7 PPG, 5.8 RPG). While Giles is a proven scorer, Tulsa’s defensive identity (allowing just 73.3 PPG) and length on the wing (Ade Popoola, Myles Rigsby, Romad Dean) should make life tougher for him than it was on neutral or road floors earlier this year. Wichita State’s big man Will Berg (7-2) provides size, but the Hurricane have matched up well against tall frontcourts all season.
Both teams are playing their best basketball at the right time—Tulsa 8-1 in its last 9, Wichita State 9-1 in its last 10—but the combination of home cooking, roster balance led by Green and Riley, and the uphill battle of Wichita State winning a third straight against the same conference opponent gives the edge to the hosts. Expect Tulsa to pull away late after a competitive first half, winning by 7-9 points and comfortably covering the -4.5 spread. This is the kind of spot where familiarity screams trouble for the visitors and confidence for the home team in this rare fourth matchup of the season. Tulsa checks every box to advance and cash the spread Tuesday night in Reynolds Center.
