Virginia Tech vs Clemson: The Best Bet for Wednesday’s CBB Slate

The college basketball regular season is dwindling down. This year has absolutely flown by, and there are only a couple of weeks left before we reach March Madness. We are at the point of the CBB season where every game matters for teams on the bubble. Virginia Tech, as of right now, is on the bubble and in most “First Four Out” groupings. They have a massive game on Wednesday night on the road against Clemson that could make or break their season…

The Hokies have the offensive weapons, road resilience, and the matchup to keep this game within single digits—or even pull off the upset. Virginia Tech’s offense averages 79.7 points per game (top-110 nationally), and they’ll exploit Clemson’s middling scoring attack (76.0 PPG). Senior forward Tobi Lawal is the engine—an explosive athlete who attacks the rim, draws fouls, and cleans the glass with authority. His ability to finish through contact will test Clemson’s frontcourt of RJ Godfrey and Nick Davidson, who struggle against physical, vertical threats. 

Sharpshooter Jaden Schutt, back for his senior year, stretches defenses with elite three-point shooting, forcing Clemson’s guards like Dillon Hunter and Ace Buckner to chase off-ball. Point guard Ben Hammond orchestrates the attack with poise, limiting turnovers and finding open looks—critical against Clemson’s disciplined but not overwhelming pressure. Let’s just hope that Neoklis Avdalas doesn’t turn the ball over 5+ times and shoot 35% from the field. 

Despite Tyler Johnson’s ongoing injury setback, the Hokies have depth in players like Jailen Bedford and Christian Gurdak to step up in rotation. More importantly, Virginia Tech has covered the spread in 7 of their last 11 road games, showing they play hard as underdogs. Their defense allows 74.4 PPG, good enough to contain Clemson’s deliberate half-court sets that often result in lower-scoring, tighter games.

Clemson is excellent at home, but they’re not a blowout machine. Several of their wins have been close, and guard Zac Foster’s knee injury limits backcourt depth. After a demanding recent stretch, including West Coast travel, the Tigers could lack the sharpness to pull away decisively.
