I feel like this NFL offseason took forever, but week one of the season absolutely flew by. There are some teams that impressed me for sure, but there are also some teams/players that disappointed in the first week of the season. Let’s talk about some of the biggest week one letdowns in the NFL…
1. Chargers / Justin Herbert
The Chargers didn’t just lose, they got beaten on Sunday. Justin Herbert didn’t do anything to stop it, either. The most popular week one survivor pick not only lost outright, but got manhandled by the Cardinals, who are supposed to be one of the worst teams in the NFL this season.
Everyone was expecting fireworks from the Chargers and Mike McDaniel, and maybe that’s why they struggled so much. It was a really poor showing from the Chargers in just about every facet of the game. Will they be alright? Is it time to hit the panic button? Not yet, it’s only week one.
2. Baker Mayfield
It’s hard to call this week a letdown for Baker Mayfield, who did just sign a 3-year $165 million dollar extension, but he did not play nearly well enough to lead his team to victory on Sunday. Throwing zero touchdowns and losing three fumbles against one of the worst defenses in the NFL will land you on this letdown list, and although the Bucs kept this one close, it wasn’t because of Baker’s play. After a massive contract extension, I think we all probably expected a little more from Baker Mayfield on Sunday.
3. David Blough
There was so much hype surrounding David Blough, the new playcaller and offensive coordinator for the Commanders. He didn’t live up to the hype in week one, though, and had some questionable playcalls to end the game. The shuttle pass to a tight end instead of letting JD5 cook was an all-time horrendous call on the two-point conversion attempt, but hey, it was his NFL playcalling debut? Should we give him another chance? Probably, but I’ve got my eye on you David Blough…
