Typically, the me-guy of the week has to be from the week prior. This week, we are making an exception. There is a me-guy who was discovered early on Monday that has to be talked about. You’re probably asking yourself, what is a me-guy? I’m glad you asked. It’s simple: a "me-guy" is a selfish person who prioritizes their own interests, stats, or personal gain over the team or group. This week’s winner epitomizes all of these characteristics, so much so that we had to make an exception to sneak him in late as the me-guy of the week winner.
Every year, Punxsutawney Phil does the same song and dance. He comes out of his little hole, either sees his shadow or doesn’t, and for some reason, we as a society let him call the shots. Why are we letting Punxsutawney Phil decide the weather for the next six weeks? Who signed off on this? I would have loved to be a fly on the wall for those approval meetings.
This year, me-guy Phil once again saw his shadow. Because of this little furry fella, we now have to deal with nearly two months of cold weather. Thanks Phil, you really helped the team out with that one my man! Maybe if you weren’t such a me-guy, you would think of what the people really wanted most, the winter to end. Instead, he’s making everything about himself, apparently seeing his shadow for what feels like the millionth year a row.
Punxsutawney Phil is such a me-guy, he has an entire town named after him. The yearly TV special takes place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, in front of thousands of bystanders. Multiple men dressed up in crazy top hats and fits held Punxsutawney Phil in their arms in front of the mic, announcing his decision. First off, how can these men understand what Phil is saying? Do they speak groundhog, or are they just pocket watching Phil 24/7 until he sees his shadow? Honestly, these guys might be more me-guys than Phil.
Did you see these guys in top hats celebrating like they just won Game 7 of the World Series at the end of that video? The whole event is absolutely ridiculous. People are holding up signs saying “I Love Phil” like he’s the lead singer of a boy band. If you are spending time out of your day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to watch if Phil sees his shadow or not, you need help.
The worst part is, Phil isn’t even accurate. He makes this whole event about himself seem like the biggest deal every year, and he’s hitting at a 35% clip. If Phil wasn’t a me-guy, he’d be promoting the other animals’ predictions, which are hitting at a much better rate. Let’s be real here, Punxsutawney Phil only cares about one thing and one thing only, himself. Side note, it’s actually crazy that this little groundhog is wrong almost 70% of the time. It’s a coin flip, how can he be wrong so frequently? Should we start fading Phil?
You can’t tell me Phil doesn’t absolutely love the spotlight. Look at his glowing aura as the weird top hat men lift him out of his cage. Also, he only comes out of his little hut if you chant his name, which certainly makes him a me-guy. Do you think Phil cares about anyone else besides himself? It certainly doesn’t look like it after seeing all of these clips and videos. I’m just not getting team player vibes from the guy. Congratulations, Punxsutawney Phil… you are the me-guy of the week!
Honorable mention: there weren’t many other me-guys that popped off the page this week. Darryn Peterson is a borderline me-guy, but I can’t tell if he’s actually hurt or if he just doesn’t give a hoot. BookitwithTrent is typically in the running, but he’s safe… for now.
