There are way too many me-guys in sports. You’re probably asking yourself, “what is a me-guy?” It’s simple: a "me-guy" is a selfish person who prioritizes their own interests, stats, or personal gain over the team or group. It's commonly used in sports contexts to criticize players seen as focused on individual achievements rather than collective success. So, who was the biggest me-guy in sports this past week? I’m glad you asked…
It’s pretty clear who takes the cake for the 3rd-ever me-guy of the week award. Unless you live under a rock, you probably saw Alex Honnold climb the Taipei 101 skyscraper over the weekend. What an impressive feat, and from what I’ve been reading, it’s not even the most impressive free climb of his career. Honnold has been training for this insane skyscraper climb for over three years. He’s been obsessing over this climb, and he’s not afraid to tell you about it, either. Some serious me-guy activities from Honnold here, I’ll say it.
Look, the actual act of climbing the skyscraper itself isn’t a me-guy move. It’s the way he did it, in front of the entire world livestreaming the event on Netflix, that makes him a me-guy. Everyone is roasting him for only making $500,000 for risking his life climbing Taipei 101, and he said he would have done it for free. You’re telling me, Alex Honnold would have risked his life on the national stage in front of his wife, for FREE? I’m just not buying it, and that sounds like something a me-guy would say to look cool.
I have to give Trent some credit for his post during the climb as well. This guy was 100% aura farming at the top of this skyscraper, waving to people inside the building, stopping every so often for a live interview, even leaning back and doing trickshots while ascending the building. These are all textbook me-guy moves, pulled off at the highest level.
To make matters worse, Honnold used a ladder to climb the final 10% of the skyscraper. On the broadcast, they said it was impossible for him to achieve this climb without using a ladder during the final portion. You’re telling me, a guy who can climb a skyscraper in under an hour and a half can’t figure out another way to finish the job without assistance? That sounds like a handout to me, and it would have been more impressive if he achieved his goal without using the ladder.
Sure, the climb itself was quite spectacular. When you really dive into the event, and realize this guy pretty much risked his life for less than a million dollars, you start to realize he might be doing it for the sole purpose of others tuning in and watching him accomplish the feat. Only a true me-guy would pull this stunt, taking a selfie at the top of the skyscraper for everyone to see. Honestly, Honnold might’ve just earned me-guy of the month honors, but we’ll see once that award is revealed in the coming days.
Honorable mention: There were plenty of options for me-guy of the week this time around. Michael Porter Jr. has been jacking shots at an alarming rate, acting like the only player on the Nets who’s allowed to shoot. BookitwithTrent was once again in consideration for me-guy of the week after he sneakily cashed out early on a PrizePicks lineup without telling Rav, making $8,000 while Rav made nothing. Luckily for Michael Porter Jr. and Trent, the me-guy of the week was unanimous.
