The Kansas City Royals team total under 3.5 (-140) is a strong play tonight against the Detroit Tigers, primarily because their offense is set up to struggle immensely against Troy Melton. Melton has been one of the sharpest arms in baseball this season, posting a 5-1 record with a sparkling 1.80 ERA and elite 0.87 WHIP across 55 innings. He’s generating swings-and-misses with a mid-90s fastball and has been especially dominant lately, allowing just one earned run over his last three starts while racking up high strikeout totals. His command and ability to suppress hard contact make him a nightmare matchup for a Royals lineup that already ranks near the bottom of the AL in runs scored and lacks consistent power.
Kansas City is missing star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. (back), stripping the lineup of its best on-base threat and run producer. Without Witt, the Royals lean on Salvador Perez, Vinnie Pasquantino, and a collection of role players who have shown high strikeout rates and limited ability to square up premium velocity. Melton’s profile—high-velocity four-seam, strong whiff rates, and ground-ball lean—exploits exactly those weaknesses. Expect plenty of soft contact, infield outs, and strikeouts as Kansas City struggles to put together multi-hit innings.
Randy Dobnak starts for the Royals and could keep the game close with his ground-ball approach, but that only reinforces a low-scoring script. Comerica Park plays neutral-to-slightly pitcher-friendly, and Detroit’s bullpen is solid enough to finish what Melton starts. The Royals have been inconsistent offensively all year (43-60 overall) and simply do not have the firepower or depth to manufacture 4+ runs against a pitcher this locked in.
At -140, the under 3.5 on Kansas City’s team total is a mandatory bet tonight. Melton is the clear difference-maker; the Royals’ bats are in for a long night. I’ll meet you at the cash counter when the Royals get shut out on Thursday.
