Padres vs Braves: The Best Bet to Make for Monday Night

The under 9 is my favorite play for tonight’s Padres-Braves matchup (JP Sears vs. Bryce Elder at Truist Park) due to a combination of underrated starting pitching, one struggling offense, defensive strengths, and park/bullpen factors that should keep the total under the number.
JP Sears, the Padres’ lefty, has posted roughly a 5.03 ERA with a 1.42 WHIP in limited 2026 starts. He strikes out only about 20% of batters, walks around 9-10%, and allows 1.8+ HR/9 while posting a modest 42% ground-ball rate. On the road, his numbers worsen (5.59 RA, high slugging allowed). The Braves hit well against lefties overall (.242 AVG, strong SLG), but Sears’ profile often leads to manageable damage rather than blowups—especially if he induces weak contact. Sears has been better than we all expected in his return to the mound this season, let’s hope that continues tonight.
Bryce Elder has been steadier for Atlanta with a 4.12 ERA and 1.25 WHIP across 18 starts. He also generates ground balls (42%) and limits walks better (7.5%), though his strikeout rate sits around 20% and he’s surrendered 1.3 HR/9. At home, Elder is typically sharper, and Truist Park’s dimensions don’t overly punish his sinker/slider style. The Padres rank near the bottom of the league in batting average (.221-.235 range), OBP, and overall production, especially against right-handers. They score around 4.2 runs per game and struggle to generate consistent traffic.
Team-level trends reinforce the under. The Padres sit around 4.2 runs scored/allowed per game with a weak .223 AVG and low power output. Atlanta’s offense is far better (top-5 runs, high AVG/SLG), but they’ve shown inconsistency lately and face a lefty who can exploit platoon edges. Both teams lean on solid bullpens (Padres recently at 5.35 ERA in a sample, Braves elite overall), and neither starter is a high-strikeout dominator likely to rack up quick innings—meaning middle relief should limit late damage.
Truist Park plays neutral-to-slightly hitter-friendly, but tonight’s low-offense visitor and ground-ball-oriented starters tilt it toward fewer runs. Recent series trends and season-long averages (combined runs often in the 7-8 range for these clubs) support a total closer to 7-8 than 9+. Weather (typical July evening in Atlanta) shouldn’t provide major wind or humidity boosts.
Sears’ road vulnerabilities are offset by San Diego’s anemic bats, while Elder’s home stability and Atlanta’s occasional offensive lulls cap the ceiling. Expect a low-scoring, grind-it-out game where quality defense and bullpen work preserve a final tally comfortably under 9. This matchup profiles as 4-3 or 5-3 at worst—prime territory for the under. I’ll meet you at the cash counter when the under cashes with ease on Monday night.
