A Baseball Guys Guide to Baseball - Saturday, July 18th
Let's get eyes on this promising Pirates pitcher.

Hello, I’m Jeff Sunday and I am a newly proclaimed baseball guy who is going all in on watching baseball. Let’s have a quick “huddle up” this Saturday morning so we can all get on the same page about who needs eyes on them. Similar to Christian Scott (see below), I will have a scouting report to follow.
In a very selfish way, I’m happy the Pirates/Guardians game got postponed yesterday. I really want to get eyes on Pirates pitcher Jared Jones and would have been unable to because I went to the Yankees game. The Yankees are a dumpster fire but we can talk about them another day in another article.
This is a sneaky fun series that’s starting up. Cleveland went into the break sweeping the red hot Marlins in Miami, and the Pirates swept the Milwaukee Brewers, who are arguably one of if not the best team in baseball.
If you are a baseball guy, please raise your hand. If your hand is raised then this should be on your television. It will be on mine, because again, I am a baseball guy.
Meet Jared Jones. He’s a 24 year old 6 ft 210 lb pitcher that was drafted in the second round by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2021.
Jared Jones is throwing today against what Steak calls the “Gritty Guards” after his 6 inning perfect game performance against the Braves before the All Star break. That was Jared’s 8th game of the season as he’s coming back from injury. He made his MLB debut in 2024 but had to undergo elbow surgery and missed all of the 2025 season. I understand the Pirates wanting to be careful with a 24 year old pitcher, but it's still tough to pull a guy who’s a perfect game. Not a no hitter, not a no hitter…a PERFECT GAME (Allen Iverson voice.)
Per Baseball Savant (that’s a website, not my nickname) only Patrick Bailey and Rhys Hoskins have seen Jones. The rest of the Guardians roster is unfamiliar. Bailey and Hoskins do have good history against him, but I always think lack of familiarity greatly benefits the pitcher.
I’m not going to bet on anything Jared Jones related just yet. Being a baseball guy is not being a baseball degenerate. I’m watching for the love of the game and to produce a scouting report so my fellow comrades can all be more familiar with Jared Jones.
Thanks for reading, and if you have any other suggestions on who should be on the television today, please drop them in the comments.
